Acupuncture FAQ
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a therapy that uses very fine, sterile needles to gently stimulate specific points on the body. These points influence the nervous system, circulation, connective tissue, and the way your body processes pain and stress.
How does
acupuncture work?
Acupuncture works by gently stimulating the nervous system, improving circulation, and releasing the body’s natural pain-relief chemicals. This helps reduce inflammation, relax muscles, calm stress responses, and support overall balance. In simple terms: acupuncture helps your body reset so it can heal and function more smoothly.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people feel little to no pain. You may notice a quick pinch or a dull, heavy, warm, or tingly sensation. This is normal and often a sign that your body is responding. Many people find treatments surprisingly relaxing and even fall asleep!
Can I get acupuncture if I am pregnant?
Yes! It can be incredibly supportive. We simply avoid a few specific points during pregnancy and tailor treatment to each trimester. Acupuncture is also widely used for nausea, sleep, pelvic pain, and labour preparation.
What if I am scared
of needles?
Totally valid. Many of my patients come in nervous and end up saying, “Oh that’s it?” We can go slow, use fewer points, or start with non-needle techniques.(acupressure, ear seeds, cupping, gua sha, moxa) This is YOUR treatment and you are in the drivers seat!
Logistics FAQ
Do you offer
direct billing?
Yes. The majority of extended health care plans will cover acupuncture up to a certain percentage. Both clinics I work at offer direct billing but if you perfer to submit on your own, we will provide you with all the information you need.
How many sessions will I need?
Everyone responds differently but I typically start folks off with 4 treatments, 1 week apart and then we go fro there. Acute issues often shift in 2-4 treatments. Chronic or long-standing conditions may take more time. We’ll check in regularly and adjust the plan as your body responds.
What should I wear?
You are welcome to disrobe to your comfort level - same as you would for a massage. If you would rather stay clothed, wear something comfortable that allows access to your lower arms, lower legs, and back. You don’t need to bring anything special just yourself.
